EWI OF TULSA 2021-2022 PRESIDENT
____________________________________
Hello Tulsa Chapter.

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying your summer. Our July Chapter Meeting focused on Connections and Membership Orientation. We also conducted our July Business Meeting where we presented the 2022-2023 Board slate, approved 3 Chapter Delegates for LCAM, and voted to continue our practice of non-compete for membership. Thank you to all who voiced an opinion and asked or answered questions during the meeting. It was an informative meeting with very good conversation.

Our Executive of the Year program will be held on August 11th at Montereau. Our chapter’s Executive of the Year program is a time-honored tradition dating back to 1956, the year our Chapter was chartered. Each year, we honor one outstanding EWI Firm Executive for their contribution of involvement and support to EWI of Tulsa.  Past recipients are literally a Who’s Who list of Tulsa Executives. This year’s honoree is no exception as this Executive is continually showing the importance of being engaged in this excellent organization. Please RSVP for both you and your Executive to attend this special, inspirational event.

Lastly, I’d like to provide a report on The Texoma Board Forum held July 15-16 in Houston. Tamara and I attended and enjoyed collaborating with the Corporate Board and “TEXOMA” chapter members in attendance. I was asked by Corporate Board Development Director Marji Zamora to speak during a panel discussion about our Chapter’s successful philanthropy project held last December benefitting the Community Food Bank of Eastern OK and addressed what keeps our membership thriving. I made sure to sit next to each of the following Corporate Board Officers who attended, either during meetings, meals, or networking blocks, to carve out one-on-one discussions with President Christine Healy, Secretary/Treasurer Charlie Rosenquist, BCDP Director Cheryl Holmes, Retention Director Cheryl McCall, and Development Director Marji Zamora. During these one-on-ones I was honored when they asked me about our Chapter’s best practices and to share this information with other chapters, and humbled when asked by three of them to consider serving on their upcoming Corporate Committees. EWI’s Corporate Board really values our Tulsa Chapter and what we bring to the table. This really motivates me, and I hope it will you too, to stay engaged and involved in EWI.

I am most proud of our Chapter’s strong philanthropic spirit, our resilient and thriving membership, and the priceless professional and personal growth opportunities offered and received while serving on our EWI Chapter Board these past 3 years. Please consider Chapter and Corporate Board and Committee service. It is rewarding and pushes you to reach further than you ever imagined possible. Together we can do great things!

July Meeting Highlights

July
Program Comments:

Comments on catering (Hilton Garden Inn):
  • Fabulous food
  • For a mandatory business meeting, I feel as though we should serve a higher end meal
  • I asked for cheese
Comments on Venue (Hilton Garden Inn):
  • The room was good for us!  Not their fault there was a crying baby outside our room!
  • Finding it was tricky but good location.
  • Convenient and good parking.
Comments on the speaker presentation:
  • I'm not new to EWI and I had trouble following what Tonya and Gloria were trying to do.
  • Scott is very passionate and supportive of EWI. Grateful for his support of our chapter. Tonya and Gloria did a wonderful job with orientation.
  • Good way to handle orientation and serve as a reminder to older members.  Scott Burnett did an excellent job presenting on "why EWI".
  • Scott is always uplifting.
Suggestions for Programs:
  • I love the idea of this meeting and would suggest doing something like this again since we don't have an orientation.

Member Spotlight

Meet Sara Shaklee!

Did you know… I am a Trust Officer for Trust Company of Oklahoma (TCO) and also assist our Chairman, President & CEO, Jim Arens. I started with the company in 2016 as the assistant to our Trust Department head and have held in other roles within the Trust and Agency departments since then. My role allows me to serve individuals and families as a financial planner, investment manager, corporate trustee, guardian and personal representative, perfectly marrying my heart for service with my love of finance.

Last year, when Jim encouraged me to join EWI, I no idea what was in store for me. Since I became a part of this organization, I see how it acts as an incubator for the growth and development of members, both personally and professionally. I am so grateful to be a part of the EWI Tulsa chapter and look forward to building on the years of stewardship and connection that are at the center of our mission.

A little bit about me:

•  I have a darling 15-year-old volleyball player who is going into her sophomore year at Holland Hall.
•  Nearly year-round you will find me on the sidelines of the volleyball courts cheering her on!
•  The creative bug bit me early on and anyone visiting my home will see that expressed either in my cooking or by the numerous paintings and pottery on display that I have created over the years.
•  I also love to travel anywhere tropical and have found that my favorite souvenirs are recipes for that special drink or dish that reminds me of the trip.

We NEED EWI Mentors!
Remember when you first joined? Scary, right?
We would love to get a few mentors to help guide our
new members along the way.

A Message from Debbie Burton

Everyone is encouraged to go to http://act.alz.org/goto/EWIMemoryMakers to register to join our "EWI Memory Makers" Walk Team and/or make a donation toward our team.  This year's Tulsa Walk is September 17th at 1875 S Boulder Park Drive, Tulsa, OK 74119, and I would love to be surrounded by my EWI sisters and friends during this Walk, which is good social exercise, too!

I now walk in memory of my Aunt Ronda who passed away September 2020 from dementia, and I carry a purple flower in her memory.  Who will you walk for?

Alzheimer’s disease is relentless. So are we.  Support our team for the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's®, the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
