EWI OF TULSA 2021-2022 PRESIDENT

Hello Tulsa Chapter.

I hope this letter finds you well and ready for summer to arrive. I also hope it finds you as inspired as I am after attending our chapter’s annual B/C/DP Scholarship Banquet on May 12th.  What an amazing evening of fellowship that culminated in awarding $25,000 in scholarships to eight very deserving students.  The scholarship banquet is always one of my favorite chapter meetings to atten0 and this year was no exception.  I want to extend my appreciation to Kelli Gernandt, Janis Cohlmia and the B/C/DP Committee for planning and executing the scholarship banquet.  It is such a joy to see the positive impact the scholarships make for these students to continue their educational endeavors.  Congratulations to each of our scholarship recipients.

Our next Chapter Meeting will be held on June 9th.  Marie Stephens, Executive Representative for Nothing Bundt Cakes, will be our speaker and her topic will be entrepreneurship and her journey to becoming a successful business owner.

We will hold our Executive Appreciation Breakfast on June 15th at 7:30 am at ONEOK, and invitations have been mailed to our Executives.  Please RSVP for your Executive to attend so that we will have a proper headcount.

Lastly, EWI’s Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (“LCAM”) will be held September 14-16th in Corpus Christi, Texas.  I hope you will plan to attend LCAM with Tamara and me as we represent our Tulsa chapter.  It is a great experience to attend EWI’s Annual Meeting, as well as the excellent programming, leadership, and professional development course offerings during the conference. Register before June 30th to receive an early bird registration discount of $100.

See you at our June 9th Chapter Meeting.  Together we can do great things.

May Program Comments:

Comments on catering (Downtown Doubletree Hotel):
  • Slow
  • Everything was delicious. Many empty plates at my table.
  • DT did a very good job. The food was warm and the chicken was very tender.
  • The food was great! Really enjoyed it.
  • The chicken was tasty, as was the well-flavored rice.
Comments on Venue (Doubletree Downtown Hotel):
  • Not a warm atmosphere.
  • Easy to get to and great parking.
  • The staff was very friendly.
  • As much as I do not like driving downtown, this venue feels comfortable and the staff is always friendly.
Comments on the speaker presentation:
(Julie Chin)
  • Julie was a very enthusiastic speaker and great topic, “Dream Big.” Scholarship banquet is my favorite every year! Loved the video too.
  • Julie Chin is delightful!
  • Julie Chin was an excellent choice as speaker for this meeting.
  • Julie Chin did a great job speaking. Very engaging! As always, the BCDP did a fantastic job with presentation and video.
  • Loved Julie's presentation.
  • Julie Chin gripped the audience as soon as she walked to the podium and began speaking. I enjoyed her enthusiasm, energy and message.
What suggestions do you have for Programs?
  • Wonderful B/C/DP event, great that so many students and judges were able to attend.
  • Not for Programs, but is there any way we can have the names on the badges printed in a brighter font color? They are rather hard to read with the black ink on the dark background.
  • Favorite program of the year is always the EWISP/ASIST Banquet
Email from Dana Nichols to Kelli Gernandt, B/C/DP Director

Thank you for last night’s experience. To my left at the table was an EWISP recipient’s father and to my right, the EWISP judge from Eugene Field.

I could tell from his conversation topics the father was a man of means and I think the evening showed him some meaningful things.

Bree Decker spoke frankly about teaching her students how to get themselves up and dressed and to school on time, when there is no one at their home/apartment to help them.

She recalled a recent Reading Rally at Eugene Field, where students were amazed to pick out books for themselves and take them home, where there were no other books just for them.

He watched an awesome video where determined and grateful adults appreciated getting financial assistance in achieving their dreams for themselves and their families.

He took a good long look at our Member Firms page at the end of the night, recalling the professional efforts of the EWI Reps who put together a great program and celebration event, and once again handed out some real money for education.

B/C/DP is a challenging committee and a labor of love. I am positive you made a wonderful impression on him and similarly many others who enjoyed the evening.

Thank you so much for your efforts, Dana.

Member Spotlight

Meet Shelly Reynolds, Executive Assistant to the President at World Travel

Did you know…?  I am a brand-new employee to World Travel (https://worldtraveltoday.com) and new in the travel industry.  World Travel is the largest travel agency in Oklahoma and one of the top 50 in the nation.  Tulsa is the headquarters location with branch offices in Oklahoma City and in Austin, Texas.  This business has over sixty years of educating and empowering both business and vacation travelers.

Some of my dream travel destinations include Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy & the Scandinavian countries.

So excited to be a part of EWI Tulsa chapter.  I have been an executive assistant for many years of my career that was mostly in the oil and gas industry.  I was unaware of the exciting and close culture of EWI.  All of the members have been friendly and helpful.  My boss was named the Executive of the Year in 2016 by EWI of Tulsa.

A few fun facts about me:

I earned my bachelor's degree in 2001 while working a full-time job

My husband is a cinematographer

Our son is engaged to be married in August 2022

My father and I are both passionate about family genealogy

I enjoy digging in the earth and growing foods in my small backyard garden

I make pepper jellies from my homegrown peppers

In and Around Tulsa!

The T.E.G. International Jazz Fest presented by SpiritBank coincides with the Tulsa Arts District's monthly First Friday Art Crawl, an event that often draws nearly 3,000 people each month.

This, coupled with the event's free admission, will likely ensure big crowds to take in some truly great jazz performances.

Featured Artists:
Saxophonist/Multi-Instrumentalist Dee Lucas
Saxophonist/Multi-Instrumentalist and Vocalist Joyce Spencer:
Dr.Clark Gibson and the Northeastern State University Jazz Ensemble
Jazz Vocalist Cynthia Simmons
Taylor Entertainment Group (T.E.G.) brings the event to Tulsa annually as a part of International Jazz Day, a worldwide day recognized by the United Nations and UNESCO and dates back to 2011.

While International Jazz Day is traditionally observed on April 30, the T.E.G. International Jazz Fest is an official International Jazz Day event.
June 8-12, 2022
Women's Empowerment Brunch!
Celebrating self, sisterhood, and success.
Good food, good information, and great connections.
