EWI OF TULSA 2021-2022 PRESIDENT
____________________________________
Hello Tulsa Chapter.

March was a great month for our chapter as we celebrated our 66th Anniversary.  Jody Davis, Executive Representative for Accent Moving, Storage and Logistics spoke at our chapter meeting of the challenges and rewards of owning a family business.  We then bestowed the honor of Chapter Life Member on Myra Trahern, and she spoke of her service as both a corporate and chapter president.  We also recognized 22 of our past presidents who were in attendance.  To me, these women represent leadership, integrity and grace and set the bar high for our chapter. I’m sure our first chapter president, Elizabeth Brimm, would be proud of our chapter’s many accomplishments.

I want to provide some updates on what is in store for the upcoming months.
  • Aaron Fulkerson of Schnake Turnbo Frank will speak at our April 14th Chapter Meeting.  His topic is professional values, and it will be an interactive meeting.

  • Our Annual Scholarship Banquet will be held May 12th.  To date we have awarded over $600,000 in life changing scholarships to students in need.

  • Executive Appreciation Night is August 11th.  We will honor and thank our executives for their continued support of EWI.  Please mark your calendar to attend this important chapter meeting.

  • EWI’s Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting will be held September 14-16th in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The conference provides excellent leadership and professional development courses and I hope you will make plans to attend.  Our chapter has received the prestigious Chapter of Excellence award at the last four conferences, and we are on track to win again this year.

Please share your monthly Connect newsletters and chapter meeting notices with your Executive.  This ensures they have information about our chapter meetings, professional development, and the links to our social media sites.  I look forward to seeing you at our April chapter meeting.  Together, we can do great things.

March Meeting Highlights
66th Anniversary
EWI of Tulsa

Past Presidents
EWI of Tulsa 66th Anniversary
2006-2007 Past President & Speaker Jody Davis, Accent Moving, Storage & Logistics/Mayflower

Myra Trahern was awarded Chapter Life Member and spoke of her service as a corporate and chapter president.

March Program Comments:

  • Very well done honoring our past presidents, charter members and past corporate presidents with our anniversary celebration.
  • Jody is very inspiring and driven. I loved her presentation and enjoyed getting to learn more about her family business.
  • It was so wonderful seeing so many Past Presidents!
  • What an awesome story about Jody and her legacy, thank you Jody for your time last night.
  • Jody did an outstanding job!  She is a remarkable role model.
  • Loved hearing Jody's experience as a young female entrepreneur and as a single mom!
  • Jody is EWI personified. She is everything we all strive to be!
March Comments on Venue/Catering:
  • Need an audio system.
  • Great room, love their office facility.
  • The room was tight. We need to have a microphone. Some speak softer than others.
  • Helmerich & Payne and their EWI Reps are always so gracious when we have our meeting there.
  • The only challenge was walking to my car in the dark alone.
  • I know it was a special meeting and the food was delicious.
  • The condensation from food containers caused the crispy foods to be soggy. i.e. green beans and honey shrimp. Not enough food for all the attendees. It appeared we ran out of meat for the lettuce wraps.
  • We really should have knives.

Member Spotlight

Meet Janis Cohlmia, Horticulture Manager of Tropical Plant Design!

DID YOU KNOW...According to a study by NASA Technology, the air indoors is as much as 30 times more toxic than the air outside.  NASA's study notes, “The leaves, roots, soil and their associated microorganisms of plants have been evaluated as a possible means of reducing indoor air pollutants”.  The plant roots and their associated microorganisms then destroy the pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and the organic chemicals, eventually converting all these air pollutants into new plant tissue.

My personal favorite, the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas Zamifolia) has a unique succulent appearance but is a very sturdy palm of the aroid family.  The benefits of the ZZ are the waxy glossy green leaves with its ability to withstand lower lighting while being drought tolerant.  The stems grow upright and arching with oval-shaped leaves giving the plant an almost feather like appearance.  As the plant grows the stems thicken at the bottom from starchy rhizomes which is the reason for the drought tolerance.  My favorite things about the ZZ plant, while being drought tolerant, it is known to have very few disease or insect issues and is a proven air purifier.

Tropical Plant Design started in Tulsa in 1984 and is a nationally recognized design, build and maintenance firm for interior landscapes.  Our professional services are available to malls, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, offices and building lobbies as well as plant consultation services for the homeowner.  At TPD, we strive to provide professional quality interior plantscape services to bring all the benefits of healthy indoor plants to your home or workplace.

In addition to the interior landscape services, Christmas decorating, and design services are also available.  Everything from single wreaths and garland to fully designed and decorated Christmas trees 5’ to 20’ tall.  Each design is unique and designed specifically to fit the needs of the individual client’s style and decor.

Long story short, Tropical Plant Design has been providing interior landscape services to the Tulsa and surrounding areas for nearly 40 years.  We take pride in providing personalized and responsive service.  So, call me and place your order today for a ZZ plant or any one of our services.  It’s that easy – just call!

Herbal Affair & Festival

HA Logo33rd Annual Sand Springs Herbal Affair

Plans are underway for the Sand Springs Herbal Affair in downtown Sand Springs.

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 16th from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.   Shop the many vendors on hand who will be offering herbs, perennials, natives and heirloom plants and more.  Here you can find unique arts & crafts, herbal products, gardening supplies & décor while enjoying LIVE music and great food!

Parking?  Try riding the FREE shuttle service (8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.) by parking at Charles Page High School (500 N. Adams Road) and enjoy the short ride into our historic downtown Triangle District!  You can buy products in the event and carry them with you on the shuttle.   Other parking is on-street near downtown.

Remember, for ALL vendors you must fall into one of these four (4) categories:

Grower/Producer Vendor- farmer/ rancher/gardener that grows/raises 100% of the fruit, vegetable, herb, nut, grain, meat, fiber, dairy, egg, honey, plants and flowers on their own farm.

Prepared Food Vendor- a licensed, prepared food handler who prepares 100% of the food items they sell. Food trucks do NOT fall into this category (see Food Truck Vendor below).

Craft Vendor- a crafts person who produces the finished craft items (such as body care, pottery, candles, baskets, garden related items, etc.) they sell.  Direct sales companies such as Amway, Avon, Arbonne, Scentsy, etc. to not meet this criterion.

Food Truck Vendor-  Commercial food trucks, selling food on-site.  Most need to be self-contained power; water and any waste.

As a downtown festival, spaces are always in demand and typically become sold out.  Each "booth" is a 10' x 10' bare curb space within the roadway.  Vendors can request from 1 to up to 3 (10' x 30') consecutive booth spaces.  We will try to accommodate each request, but space can be limited!

What began in 1989 as a small downtown street sale has grown to attract over 25,000 people and spurred other communities to host similar events. However, the Sand Springs Herbal Affair & Festival remains the “queen” of herbal festivals as the largest and most respected in the state.

For additional inquiries contact HerbalAffair@sandspringsok.org or call 918-246-2561

Artists, musicians and environmentalists all come together for the annual Tulsa Earth Day Celebration. At this fun-filled event, festival-goers can take a walk through an Earth Day-themed art show, listen to live music and browse through handmade crafts by talented artisans. The event will include a host of nationally-prominent environmental speakers and educational booths and demos to teach about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. Family activities will take place in the Kids Zone, and area food trucks will offer plenty of delicious options for a quick and convenient bite to eat.
